After 6 years at the top of the food chain, the unstoppable Avatar, James Cameron’s 2009 film about the Na’vi and their fight to keep their planet and it’s unobtanium intact, has finally been dethroned by JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens as North America’s top grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation. Sorry, guys, Gone With the Wind still has you beat) What can be said about this triumph? For starters, Cameron has been knocked off the pedestal as the top grossing director of all time, meaning we have a fresh start and an even more difficult task in beating the new record of $766,000,000. Maybe this will kick Cameron back into the mix and bring back the director from his noble sea explorations. Global expectations for The Force Awakens are expected to reach about 2.4 billion by the end of it’s run, and the film still has yet to open in China.
